Choosing the Right Binding for Your Booklets

One of the most common questions we hear is, “What’s the best way to bind this?” The answer depends on page count, budget, how the piece will be used, and the impression you want to make on your audience.

Sometimes the decision is obvious. A 16-page event program and a 120-page catalog probably aren’t even candidates for the same binding method. Other times, there are a couple of good options, and it helps to see samples in person before deciding.

Here’s a quick overview of the most common binding styles.

Saddle-Stitching: The Go-To Booklet

When most people think of a booklet, they’re usually thinking of saddle-stitching. Folded sheets are stapled down the center, creating an economical and professional-looking finished piece.

Saddle-stitching gives you the most bang for your buck. It’s affordable, quick to produce, and easy to distribute. For many organizations, it’s the default choice because it simply gets the job done without driving up costs.

One thing to keep in mind is that page count matters. As a booklet gets thicker, the pages begin to creep outward slightly. That’s perfectly normal, but once projects start growing in size, it’s often worth looking at other binding options.

Best For:

  • Event programs
  • Newsletters
  • Community guides
  • Small catalogs

Typical Page Count: 8-64 pages

Perfect Binding: A Step Up in Presentation

If you want your catalog or annual report to feel more like a magazine you’d find at a bookstore, perfect binding is usually the way to go. Pages are glued into a square spine, creating a clean, polished appearance.

Many clients gravitate toward perfect binding because it instantly makes a publication feel more substantial. The square spine also allows room for a title, which can be especially helpful when catalogs or reports are stored on a shelf.

If you’ve ever picked up a trade magazine and thought, “This feels professional,” there’s a good chance it was perfect bound.

Best For:

  • Annual reports
  • Product catalogs
  • Larger Magazines
  • Books (paperback)

Typical Page Count: 40+ pages

Spiral and Coil Binding: Built for Function

Coil binding is practical, and it works. These books open completely flat and can fold back on themselves, making them incredibly practical. That’s why they’re a favorite for manuals, training materials, and reference guides.

We’ve found that when people need to write in a document, keep it open on a desk, or use it regularly in the field, coil binding usually becomes the clear winner.  An upgraded version is the double Wire-o, although can dent with overuse.

Best For:

  • Training manuals
  • Workbooks
  • Field guides
  • Instruction manuals

Case Binding: When You Want to Make an Impression

Case binding is what most people think of as a hardcover book. It’s durable, impressive, and built to last.

This is the binding method people choose when they want a publication to have staying power. Whether it’s a company history, a town anniversary book, or a special keepsake project, case binding creates a finished product that feels permanent.

It requires a larger investment than other binding methods, but for the right project, the impact is hard to match.

Best For:

  • Commemorative books
  • Corporate anniversary books
  • Historical publications
  • Coffee table books

Which One Is Right for You?

There’s no single “best” binding option. The right choice depends on what you’re printing, who will be using it, and how long you expect it to last.

That’s why many of our customers like to view and compare actual samples before making a final decision. At Furbush-Roberts Printing, we can walk you through the pros and cons of each binding style, show examples of finished pieces, and help you find the best fit for your project and budget.
